Have watched Carl here in Hawaii and wish him the best. Some people and even Carl himself second guessed whether he should have left early, but what's done is done and he just has to persevere. Although Carl is a great scorer and good enough ball handler, I think if he looks at his fellow countryman's example...Steve Nash...he might see what is possible if he can develop his ball handling skills even further...from practice practice practice...I understand Nash used to dribble the ball everywhere around campus at Santa Clara. The point is not to become a point, just a superior ball handler who also happens to be a scorer...it may be the edge that will land him in the league for good when opportunity knocks. Good luck Carl...and Aloha!

Coach T.
Mt. Pearl, NL

As a long time coach from NL, I have to agree that Carl needs a shot at the NBA. Compared to some of the contracts that get signed at that level and what those players in similar size and positions bring, then Carl has a considerable edge. The foot speed has come around over the past number of years and he certainly has always shown the work ethic. Now, is his foot speed enough to get him a starting 2 spot....probably not, but in comparison to others in that back up 2 spot with a much lower shooting percentage, he should be there.
As far as looking towards NL for more potential talent, then I have to disagree. We have developed perhaps 1-5 players over the past 15 years that have been on that cusp of "ELITE!"
Beckett....
Wood....
Sooley(although some say no I say if he had wanted it....)
Benoit....
........just to name a few.
In the past 12 years.....there hasn't been anyone that could take their game that high. Combination of size, work ethic, coaching, natural gifts,etc.......
Our MUN team has proven that. Men anyway.........
If Carl were given the opportunity, even at the league minimum dollar, then his natural ability, his determination and hard work and certainly playing at that high level would finally wake the nay-sayers up. He would most certainly be an 7-10 point and 2-4 assist guy per game. Great numbers for a back up 2 guard that could give much more as each game came around. Certainly would have a small handful of 15-20 point break out games when opposing teams fell asleep on him.
Good luck Carl. Keep working hard and do what you know is best. Don't need an agent to tell you that much.

I loved the article...Carl English has worked very hard he deserves to go to the NBA...I'm from Newfoundland and know of lots of us that will continue to follow Carl's success, he may not realize it but, he has a huge fan base back home, lots of young athletes look up to Carl. I just wish that Canada Basketball would take a closer look at the talent that Newfoundland has, we definitely do not get enough recognition, if your not from Ontario, your forgotten about...it's time to look at the bigger picture and include Newfoundland athletes when seeking raw talent.

English is considered an elite foreigner in Europe at the moment. Though he me be overlooked by some of the powerhouses he is an Established North American Guard. A passport would do him wonders and give great opportunities to play with Panathinaikos or Real or Barca or Olympiakos. He would fit in great with the Raps, i mean look at some of the guys on the bench currently...

Dude, what a great interview!

I'd really like to see the Raptors give him a chance as well in the summer. I am sure he'd quickly become a fan favourite being a National boy.

But again, great read, keep it up!

Great interview with Carl, he is really a great talent and can only go up ffrom here... I remember how disappointing it was to see him not get drafted, but with his drive and determination he will make it to the NBA, and hopefully the Raptors will see a need for him.
