Tuesday Fantasy Tips – The Best Fantasy Seasons Ever

gretzkyThis article has been submitted by Erik Arnold and is a regular Tuesday feature.

My eyes are tired and my work unfinished. I have been up since 6AM watching Boston and Oakland kick off the 2008 season live in Tokyo. It was a fantastic game handed on a silver player to Boston on account of some poor plate discipline, terrible base running and a blown save from Huston Street. In other news, Julio Lugo goes 2-4 and Dice-K goes 5 innings with 6 K’s. I have settled atop my lofty perch in the ODC standings, not to be disturbed for another 5 months. To celebrate my ascent to first in the standings, I give you the synthesis of my thinking this week on what I would call the greatest fantasy seasons ever in the four “major” sports. Enjoy!

Weekend Hangover – Madness Reigns

TOURNEY SPECIAL HANGOVER HEADACHES: HEADLINES
There Are No Cinderellas? Tell that to Davidson: Something tells me the spectacular Stephen Curry is a Clipse fan: his performances did their best Pharrell impression this weekend by shouting, “Hello new world, here we come, On them Twinkie tres, with the hood screaming ‘We on our way!’” With 40 on Friday (30 after half) and 30 on Sunday (25 after half), he and the Wildcats took down mighty GTown and reminded us all why the tournament is the greatest sporting event in North America. Del’s son certainly got the memo about legends being born in March, and delivered performances that will echo in the lore of March Madness. As amazing as Davidson’s run is, the good people of Philadelphia would like to remind us that a lower seed is heading to the Sweet Sixteen: Villanova. Thank you to both sets of Wildcats (as well as Western Kentucky, Siena, Kansas State, etc.) for a weekend that surpassed all expectations, high as they were coming in.

Curry, Man! Video of the Day

Yes, the world is in love with Stephen Curry this morning. But I get a nice warm feeling from knowing that a) I was high on Davidson going in (see: Podcast) and b) I’ve been following him long enough to know he can also do this:

NCAA First Weekend Review

I’m a little bit Madness’d out, as much as it pains me to admit that. I watched 42 hours of basketball over the past four days, and those are 42 pure hours when you consider that there is very little commercial time when you are streaming and flipping channels to maximize ball intake (make your own joke). I am one of the biggest basketball fans I know, so for me to admit to Stu that my cap for a 4-day basketball bender may be 40 hours is tough. Last year, I managed because I missed chunks since it was St. Patrick’s Day weekend. This year, I watched every minute of NCAA ball available. It was…well, it was an experience. I left dents in the couch at Josh/Stu/Alex/Sean’s, gained a lot of weight (probably), and my eyes are tired.

That said, there is very little I would have changed about the weekend. It was a great blend of excitement, Cinderellas, good finishes, and bracket logic. I may not be first in any league, but I have a good shot at respectable finishes, and I’ve only lost one Elite Eight team in my primary bracket. I also fell in love with a man-boy for the second time in 12 months, made enough Greg Paulus, Dookie (The Wire character), Carl Weathers, Mendez-Valdez, and Harbl jokes to last a lifetime, and went one-and-done in back-to-back free online poker tournaments (needless to say, I’m not a poker guy).

My brain is numb. I’m Madness’d out. After a first weekend in review, of course. Here it is.

Spring Training Update: Jays Cut Johnson, Only Bullpen Questions Remain

Reed JohnsonThe curse of the Billy Goat Goatee continues. I’m going to have to publicize this theory soon.

On Sunday morning, the Toronto Blue Jays erased the largest looming question mark at spring training in Dunedin by cutting left fielder Reed Johnson. The move comes just one day after John Gibbons said the roster would be set by Friday and just two days after Jesse Litsch was named as the official #5 starter, meaning the only remaining questions are bullpen-related.

WAGs – Wives and Girlfriends of Footballers

This article has been submitted by the clearly lonely Alex Jackson.

I just returned from Dublin for some St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Aside from the actual St. Patrick’s day, the weather was quite disappointing, which resulted in a whole lot of tele-watching. Did I watched football(soccer), the England-Ireland Six Nations Rugby match, or hurling (a lacrosse-field hockey hybrid)? Yes to all of those, in spurts. But most of my time was spent watching a Girls Aloud marathon. Here.

Farber's Featured Fighters – Lucian Bute

PhotobucketThis article has been submitted by Brandon “The Hebrew Hammer” Farber, and is part one in a multi-part Canadian boxing spotlight.

So you might be wondering how good these Quebec fighters I speak of actually are? Well, Lucian “Le Tombeur” Bute is the current IBF super-middleweight champion, holding a 22-0 record with 18 coming by way of knockout. Not only is he undefeated but he has also exhibited power and brings scintillating energy and excitement to the crowd every time he steps into the ring.

This Week in MMA is a weekly feature submitted by Kyle “Nortron” Norton.

• The first round of Dream’s Lightweight Grand Prix was contested this week at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,000. The night showcased the exciting nature of Japanese mixed martial arts in Dream’s most talented weight class. Mirko “Cro Cop” also made his return to the Japanese ring with a dominating first round knockout of Tatsuya Mizuno. Dream 1 went off with only one major hitch, a No-Contest decision in the main event of the evening between Gesias Calvancante and Shinya Aoki. “J.Z. Calvan” elbowed Aoki twice to the back of the neck, causing numbness in Aoki’s arm. After ringside doctors called an end to the fight, Aoki gave a tearful speech apologizing to the fans.
