I actually think this is great for the NHL as long as the defections are limited to decent young players and aging vets like Jagr (Geno can't go to Russia). Imagine a summit series between the NHL and KHL champs - how awesome would that be? Ratings bonanza!

Well he has been quite public about going back to Russia as his dad told him that he wanted Jagr home in two years anyway.

So I'm sure that the Blue Shirts offered him a half decent deal but nothing close to what he would have wanted (he did have a great playoffs). So I think it was a bit of the family - his dad is currently needing his help to build an arena anyway - and the money.

Either way I strongly think that Jagr is one of the best players of our genereation and the NHL is worse off without him. Not that its going to kill ticket sales or anything.

Agreed on that sentiment Pope - the NHL's brutal cap management since the lockout ended is a far bigger threat than the KHL...the KHL isn't a real threat until the CBA is due up again.

By the way...does Jagr think he's a martyr heading to Russia, or is it strictly a financial move?

Just wait until the CBA is up and Bettman attempts to hit another smaller salary cap and we are forced to another lock out. Everyone will be gone to the KHL.

I wonder if TSN will at least broadcast it so we can see our former NHL players.

Either way - If it comes down to another lockout the NHL is history!
